Lieneke SLINGENBERG

Lieneke Slingenberg is Professor of Migrants and the Rule of Law at the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law (ACMRL) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She studies the regulation of migrants' lives from the perspective of the rule of law. She has published widely on the social rights of irregular migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. In her work, she analyses how states use the provision of and/or exclusion from social rights as an instrument of migration control and how this relates to human rights law, the rule of law and political theory. In addition, she studies what theoretical notions can be identified in law as relevant for the legal position of territorially present migrants (e.g. vulnerability, deservingness, non-domination, (social) membership). In her more recent work, she shifts the focus to the rule of law as a framework of assessment in migration law, and to signs and consequences of processes of autocratization in the field of migration policy. Her PhD (2012, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) was on the reception of asylum seekers under international law.

Lieneke Slingenberg co-developed the Master's track (LLM) International Migration and Refugee Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has been teaching in it ever since. In addition, she regularly teaches in the Minor Law and Global Justice: Climate, Internet and Migration (B3) and the Odysseus summer school on EU Migration and Asylum Law and Policy and she supervises bachelor's, master's and PhD theses on migration law.
