Students of the College of Europe take the role of European Commissioners

On Tuesday 6 November 2014, 29 students of the Department of European Political and Administrative Studies of the College of Europe, Bruges campus, participated in the workshop organized by Mr SANDRO GOZI, Sub-Secretary for European Affairs of the Italian government, on the procedures and negociations within the European Commission. On this occasion, the European Commission received the students on the 11th floor of the Berlaymont building, where they could take place around the table usually reserved for the meetings of the Commission’s Directors-General.

During the workshop Mr Sandro GOZI, former member of cabinet of the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi and expert of the institution, explained to the students the rules governing the college of Commissioners, as well as their sociology and the important evolutions of the institution since its creation. Mr Martin SELMAYR, Head of cabinet of the new President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, joined the workshop and answered the students’ questions about the composition of the new college.

In the afternoon, each student took the seat of one of the new Commissioners for a simulation of negociation on the revision of the European Union’s multiannual financial framework 2014-2020. This way they could discover for themselves how difficult the task is of arbitrating on extremely sensitive issues, which impact millions of European citizens.
