On 16 April 2024 (9:30-12:40 CET), the IBERDROLA Manuel Marín Chair for European Energy and Climate Policy will organise its annual conference entitled The future of EU energy and climate policies”. The conference will be composed by two panel debates, preceded by an introduction by rector Federica Mogherini and an opening address by Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

In his opening address for the Chair, Dr. Fatih Birol will discuss "Europe in the global clean energy transition", followed by a Q&A with the public.

The first panel debate will be entitled “Undoing the Green Deal? Reflections ahead of the EU elections”, which will discuss the energy and climate action options for the next mandate of the European Commission and the European Parliament after the elections. Topics will include affordability of energy, competitiveness and job creation including just transition, governance of EU energy and climate policies, security of supply and the changing international environment. Confirmed speakers include the Director General of DG CLIMA Kurt Vandenberghe and Sandrine Dixson-Declève, co-president of the Club of Rome.

The second panel will cover the upcoming publication of the 'Reflection Group on the Future of the Green Deal', a group called together at the end of 2023 by the Energy and Climate Chair. Their publication will cover three topics: governance, just transition and external aspects, each represented by one speaker on the panel. In addition to these topics, Professor Leonardo Meeus will contribute to the panel on the basis of the Florence School of Regulation's (EUI) 2023 paper "Energy policy ideas for the next European Commission : from targets to investments".
