International Women's Day at Natolin (08/03)

On Tuesday, 8 March 2022, the Students from the Society Acting for Gender Equality (SAGE) at Natolin celebrated the International Day for Women's Rights by bringing together multiple exhibitions, events, and campaigns that advocated for all women and girls and spread awareness around the entire campus.

Four exhibitions were held: History and origins of the 8th of March to explain how the movement grew out and became an annual event across the globe, Women who shape European Union to portray the inspiring women who drove change in Europe, Women in the Olympic Games to celebrate the Olympians who paved the way for female athletes today, and finally Blazing a Trail: Lives and Legacies of Irish Diaspora Women, an exhibition in collaboration with the Irish National Day. In line with the latter, and in partnership with the Ciné Club of Natolin, SAGE hosted a screening of the documentary The 8th, followed by a discussion on Ireland's campaign to remove the 8th Amendment (a constitutional abortion ban) and the overall abortion rights situation across the European Union. During this event, funds were raised through a pancake and cocktail sale to support Ukraine war refugees.

The Diplomacy Society at Natolin organized an online event with Spanish diplomat Ms Paula SÁNCHEZ DIAZ, Deputy Head of Mission of the Spanish Embassy in Afghanistan, titled Women in conflict resolution: the case of Afghanistan. Ms SÁNCHEZ spoke about the reality of women in Afghanistan before and after the fall of the Republican government, the narratives for and against the rights of girls and women and how both are often used against the respect of their fundamental rights as well as the overall security situation of the country throughout 2021. She also spoke about her experience handling the evacuation of Spanish nationals and Afghan collaborators and her experience as a woman in diplomacy.

The session was followed by a Q&A session in which students engaged in active conversation with the speaker. The event was presented and moderated by Ms Sofía TORRES BIZOU, currently a master student at the College of Europe in Natolin.
