EU-funded project El-Hiwar II – Sectorial training course on fake news, misinformation, fact-checking techniques and reliable sources of information on the EU

The College of Europe Development Office organised, from 3 to 5 November 2020, a three-day online training workshop on Fake news, misinformation, fact-checking techniques and reliable sources of information on the EU.

The course was organised for staff of the League of Arab States (LAS) Secretariat, more specifically from the Media & Communication, International Political Affairs, Social Affairs, and Legal Affairs sectors, and counted as well with a participant from the League of Arab States Mission in Brussels.

The objective of this workshop was to contribute to tackling disinformation while promoting reliable sources of information on the EU.

During the training course, participants:

  • Analysed the concepts of disinformation and misinformation and the corresponding challenges and dilemmas they pose;
  • Looked into the specific case of disinformation in times of COVID-19;
  • Analysed the tools and approach that the EU has been developing over the last few years to tackle disinformation;
  • Strengthened their knowledge and skills in fact-checking techniques.

The opening remarks were given by Nassima CHERIET, Director of the Media Department at the League of Arab States Secretariat, Suzanne KODSI, Head of Sector, Political and Social development - Relations with Regional Organisations Regional programmes Neighbourhood South at the European Commission - Directorate-General for Neighbourhood & Enlargement Negotiations, and Eduard SOLER, Team Leader of the Project.

Two trainers led the participants through the topics, Carme COLOMINA, Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Associate Researcher and member of the editorial board of the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB) and Professor of International Journalism at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain and Walid MEJRI, research journalist, trainer and co-founder of Inkyfada.

El-Hiwar II: Training and Information Course on Euro-Arab Diplomacy, is a project funded by European Commission DG NEAR and implemented by the College of Europe. It is conceived as a dialogue tool for the EU and the LAS to support strengthened work relations and to learn about each other's functioning, mechanisms and policies.
