Florian Trauner holds a Jean Monnet Chair at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and is a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe. His research interests concern the field of European integration, in particular EU justice and home affairs (internal and external dimension), dynamics of EU decision-making, fundamental rights and rule of law promotion, and EU-Western Balkans relations. A graduate of the Universities of Vienna and Copenhagen, he received his PhD in 2008 (with distinction) and his habilitation in 2015.

Prof. Trauner has written one monograph, (co-)edited seven books or Special Issues and authored over fifty academic articles or book chapters. His work has appeared in prominent journals such as West European Politics, the Journal for European Public Policy, the Journal of Common Market Studies, the Journal of European Integration, and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. Among his recent work is the 'Routledge Handbook of Justice and Home Affairs Research’ (with A. Ripoll Servent), a book with 39 chapters comprehensively covering the theories, policies and actors in this field. 

Florian Trauner had permanent or visiting positions at Renmin University of China, the Institute for European Integration Research of the University of Vienna, Science Po’s centre d'études européennes, and the Paris-based European Union Institute for Security Studies (EU ISS). He acted as an external expert for the European Commission, the European Parliament and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development.
