NENADIĆ I. - Digital Transformation and Information Integrity (20h)

Digital transformation is a process that impacts various areas of life, the economy, and democracy. It has been driven by a few technology companies and the widespread adoption of their services. The economic, social, and political power of these companies is challenging traditional models of governance and regulation, and even the ability of states to maintain sovereignty. This course will help students understand the dynamics associated to digital transformation and sovereignty, especially along the lines of private companies-states, democracies-autocracies, and national-transnational dimensions. This framework will enable students to critically examine evolving situations in practice and policy. Students will also gain a deep understanding of the European Union’s policies and legal instruments that establish more transparency and accountability for major technology companies, particularly concerning systemic societal risks like disinformation, threats to fundamental rights (including freedom of expression and media pluralism), civic discourse, and democratic processes. Many of these measures, pioneered by the EU, are now being adopted in other parts of the world.
