19th ELEA SYMPOSIUM “Applying sustainability & environmental considerations in competition analysis: a path to explore?”

From 14:00 till 18:00

Dijver, Bruges campus

Dear Sir or Madam,

European Law and Economic Analysis (ELEA) students at the College of Europe in cooperation with the Competition Society are organizing an annual symposium, which will take place at the College of Europe, in Bruges, on Thursday 13 April 2023 from 14:00 to 18:00 (CET), followed by an informal reception.

With the European Green Deal, the European Commission has set the goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. However, the recently published IPCC report 2023 has once again dramatically shown that the current pace and scale of what has been done so far is insufficient to tackle climate change. Under the headline “Applying sustainability and environmental considerations in competition analysis - a path to explore?” we will address the interconnection of competition law and environmental policy and discuss whether and how environmental considerations should be included in competition law analysis.

The conference consists of a keynote speech and two panels. In the first panel Edith Loozen (University of Amsterdam), Marieke Scholtz (European Commission) and Régis Lanneau (Paris Nanterre University) will discuss the application of sustainability and environmental considerations in antitrust. In the second panel Alec Burnside (Dechert) and Nicole Rosenboom (Oxera) will focus on the role that sustainability should play in merger control. Following the respective panels, there will be an opportunity for an individual exchange with the speakers, students and other participants. Please find more information in the attachment.

Our conference can be followed in person or online. Please feel free to register via this link.

We would be very excited to welcome you in person or online at our conference.

Kind regards,

ELEA students and the Competition Society of the College of Europe
