ECO Department organised virtual information session for Irish applicants

On Wednesday the 5th of January 2022, the European Economic Studies Department of our Bruges campus and the European Movement Ireland jointly organised an online information session for prospective students from Ireland. Permanent Professor Peter CLAEYS of the Economics Department and Lisa NIC AN BHREITHIMH, Head of Communications and Education of the European Movement Ireland (EMI) hosted the virtual meeting with students from the Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The potential applicants and future students had the chance to listen to the experiences and stories of several distinguished Irish College alumni with a study background at the TCD, while Professor CLAEYS gave a general presentation about the College of Europe Bruges campus. Chair of the Irish College of Europe Selection Committee, Professor Dermot CAHILL, and the President of the TCD Irish COE Alumni Association, Mr Cormac LITTLE were also virtually present to address the participants.

“We in EM Ireland, as administrators of the College of Europe selection process in Ireland, were delighted to support the Department of European Economic Studies with this helpful and insightful information session, featuring contributions from academics and alumni alike. It is excellent to see the numbers of students from Ireland applying to and attending the College continue to rise year on year. We are also greatly encouraged by the announcement of an increase of Irish Government scholarships for those applying to the College from Ireland, from three full scholarships in recent years now to six from 2022 onwards, with a further increase expected in future years. This was announced as part of a new Irish government strategy on EU Job opportunities, A Career for EU, launched last May by Irish Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne TD. It is very encouraging to see the Irish government’s recognition of the importance of the College of Europe to the future representation of Irish people in the European Union.”

Lisa NIC AN BHREITHIMH, Head of Communications and Education, European Movement Ireland

"While principally aimed at those who are thinking of applying to the College, the session will also be useful to those who have already applied as it covers some of the topics and questions a candidate may have to address in an interview."

Tony O'CONNOR, TCD Economics and College of Europe Alumnus & former Academic Assistant at the CoE ECO Department.
