An International Conference on “The EU and the Emerging Powers”, organised by the College of Europe together with the Center for European Studies of the Université catholique de Louvain, the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies of the University of Leuven, the Department of Political Sciences of Ghent University, the Department of Political Science of the University of Liège, the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Institute for European Studies of the Université libre de Bruxelles, the Institute for European studies of the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis, took place on 29-30 April, 2013. The two-day conference gathered prominent academics, researchers and practitioners who engaged in lively discussions during the 19 panel sessions. The conference was attended by more than 200 participants.

 

The purpose of this conference is to analyse how the recent rise of emerging powers has affected the EU's external policies and its global governance strategy across four key dimensions:

  • global economic governance;
  • global governance issues on energy and the environment;
  • global security;
  • rule of law, democracy and human rights.
