The aim of this Compact Seminar is to acquaint the students with the current issues facing NATO as it develops its new Strategic Concept and also to explain in depth why the NATO-EU relationship has continued to face political obstacles and how these obstacles could possibly be resolved in the future. By focusing on NATO and the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, the compact seminar also covers the major issues in international security at the present time; for instance how the military and civilian agencies can work together on operations, whether military forces are adapted to today's security challenges, the balance between homeland security and projecting military power beyond national territory, and how international organisations can work better together in dealing with transnational challenges such as proliferation, terrorism, energy security and cyber-attacks.
