First high-level lecture "External Perspectives on EU Diplomacy"

From 16:45 till 18:15
Verversdijk, Bruges campus

The Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe held the first annual “External Perspectives on EU Diplomacy Lecture” in Bruges on Tuesday, 12 March 2024, followed by a short Q&A session.

Ambassador Gloria NAVARRETE, Mission of Chile to the European Union:
“A Latin American Perspective on EU Diplomacy: The View from Chile”

Ambassador Gloria NAVARRETE gave an introduction to Chile and its foreign policy, followed by an in-depth analysis of the relationship between Chile and the European Union. Chile was the first country in Latin America to have a local representation of the Union and the first country to sign a comprehensive Association Agreement with the EU in 2002. This agreement has recently been upgraded into a new generation Advanced Framework Agreement. It modernizes the bilateral institutional framework to better respond to new challenges and changes experienced in recent years and includes a focus on sustainable development, gender, renewable energy, research and science, and political dialogue. Additionally, it is expected that this agreement will contribute to strengthening the relationship between the LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean) countries and the European Union as a space for cooperation and dialogue between both regions. The lecture focused also on the new prospects for collaboration that emerge after the signing of the Advanced Chile-EU Framework Agreement.
