In memory of Ivan Hodáč
Ivan Hodáč (1946–2026) was a notable alumnus of the College of Europe who stayed connected to his alma mater and supported the College throughout his life.
Ivan believed passionately in European unity, which guided him throughout his remarkable life. He made his way across the Iron Curtain in 1968 from then Czechoslovakia to Denmark, on to the College of Europe in Bruges, and then worked in EU public affairs before dedicating himself to the Aspen Institute Central Europe in Prague.
Ivan was, in particular, a driving force behind the establishment of the Czech national scholarship scheme, as well as the scholarship fund of his own promotion, the Adam Jerzy Czartoryski Promotion (1975–1976). Together with his wife, Inneke Herreman-Hodac from the Aristide Briand Promotion (1974–1975), he cared deeply that bright minds from all over Europe should have the chance to study at the College of Europe — just as he himself had been given that chance, thanks to a scholarship from the Danish Government in 1975.

Established to assist talented students with financial need, the scholarship reflects Ivan’s enduring commitment to education, opportunity, and the European project. Those who wish to honour his memory may do so by contributing to the scholarship, helping to ensure that the values he believed in continue to inspire and support future generations.
