On Thursday, 4 March 2021, the EU Fundamental and Human Rights Student Group at the College of Europe hosted a panel with the Presidents of the European Court of Justice and the German Bundesverfassungsgericht, Mr. Koen LENAERTS and Mr. Stephan HARBARTH.
"Together with our moderator Professor Robert SCHÜTZE, we discussed the relationship between the two Courts with an emphasis on the latest developments regarding fundamental rights protection in the European multi-layer system, competences, constitutional identity and the rule of law", explains the group's representative Leon ZÜLLIG, who hosted the event together with fellow student Julia JACOBY. "The idea for the event came up during one of the very first meetings of our student group in the beginning of the academic year and we are very happy and honoured that both Presidents accepted our invitation to speak about this very dynamic topic that law students at the College are engaged with on a daily basis", Julia says.
Constructive dialogueShe continues: "The many questions we received from the over 160 attendants confirmed our impression that there is a broad interest amongst our fellow students and although the speakers could not address all of them, the exchange was full of food for thought." Leon confirms and adds: "In the end, both Presidents shared an optimistic outlook for the maintenance of a constructive dialogue between the two Courts for a Europe united in peace, freedom and diversity, based on the rule of law."
