Polish Society- Solidarity with Polish Women

The students of the Polish Society of the College of Europe were deeply alarmed by the ruling issued on October 22, 2020 by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal which broadly outlaws the right to abortion in Poland.

This ruling by the Constitutional Tribunal effectively outlaws 98% of legal abortions carried out in Poland stripping Polish women of a fundamental right. This ruling should further be called into question given the highly controversial nature of the appointment of the members of the Constitutional Tribunal.

This is a huge step back. Poland already has one of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. This decision demonstrates the continuous threat to fundamental rights posed by the Law and Justice ruling party.

The Polish Society wished to express their solidarity with Polish women who have been fighting for their sexual and reproductive health rights over the last 5 years.

They called on on all members of their community to stand with them, in solidarity, by wearing black clothes on Friday, 23 October 2020.
