The College of Europe regrets to inform you of the passing away of Guy SPITAELS, Minister of State and former Chairman of the Socialist Party (Belgium). The bonds forged between Chairman SPITAELS and the College were on two levels. On the one other hand, he was an alumnus of the College, having studied there in 1957-1958 (Henry the Navigator promotion). On the other, he taught at the College for many years, first in 1961-1962, then continuously from 1965 to 1978. The subjects he taught dealt primarily with social policy and social issues in the Member States of the European Economic Community.
The College of Europe pays tribute to the memory of Guy SPITAELS who, before devoting himself entirely to politics, had contributed to the good reputation of the College, having been one of its renowned professors.
The College extends its sincere condolences to the family of Guy SPITAELS, conveying its deepest sympathy.
