EU-funded project El-Hiwar II – Online training workshop on the Wider Human Rights Agenda

The College of Europe Development Office organised a four-day online training workshop from 21 to 24 September 2020 on the Wider Human Rights Agenda including environmental, economic, social and cultural rights and its applicability to Policy Planning.

This training course was organised with the Human Rights department of the League of Arab States Secretariat. A cross-departmental group of staff members of the League attended the workshop which was opened by Mounir EL FASSI, Head of the Human Rights Department at the League of Arab States, and Suzanne KODSI, Head of Sector, Political and Social development - Relations with Regional Organisations, Regional programmes Neighbourhood South, at the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood & Enlargement Negotiations - European Commission. The lead trainer, Chifa TEKAYA, guided the participants throughout the four days.

On the first day, the group analysed the historical trajectory of Human Rights, mechanisms to follow up and monitor them, the EU’s strategy on Human Rights as well as the link between Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The second day focussed on the UN Human Rights Based Approach and compared it with the EU’s own Rights Based Approach.

The third day focussed on case studies to understand how to integrate Human Rights considerations at programming and strategic levels. The fourth day finally focussed on how to apply the concepts and tools in participants’ daily work.

Both theoretical lessons and practical exercises, as well as Q&A sessions and debates formed the workshop programme. We wish the participants all the best for their continuation!
