Since 2013, the College of Europe has welcomed officials from Asia to participate in a two-week Competition Summer School. This immersion into the complex subject of EU Competition Law has been carried out within the framework of various EU-funded projects.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Competition Summer School took place online from 28 June to 9 July 2021, where competition officials from ASEAN Member States, China, India, Japan, and Korea met virtually.
The Rector of the College of Europe, Ms Federica MOGHERINI, welcomed the participants and officially opened the first online edition of the Competition Summer School.
On 28 June, participants from all the partner countries attended a virtual visit to the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition. Mr Guillaume LORIOT, Deputy-Director General of DG Competition, opened the virtual visit welcoming the participants.
During the Competition Summer School, participants had the chance to e-meet the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Margrethe VESTAGER. Her speech is available here.
The Competition Summer School was designed to combine lectures, workshops, analysis of cases and meetings with officials from the Commission’s DG Competition. Common training sessions alternated with sessions tailored to the different jurisdictions. Leading academics, officials and practitioners delivered lectures on a wide range of topics, including the objectives and instruments of EU competition law, vertical and horizontal restraints, economics of competition law, mergers and acquisitions, public and privileged undertakings, abuse of dominance, state aid control, the EU anti-trust procedure and the impact of the digital economy. The lectures combined theory with practical experience in the form of recent cases and examples, encouraging problem solving, comparative analysis and class discussion.
