The Ibero-American, SAGE and Queeropeans National Week took place from 7 to 12 March 2022. Throughout the week the events were an opportunity to showcase and promote the Latin American, Portuguese and Spanish cultures, heritage and products, as well as to raise awareness on gender equality and LGTB+ rights.
To kick-start this week, we had the opportunity to organize a High-Level conference on EU-Latin American relations in between the Portuguese and Spanish Presidencies, with Ambassador Marcos ALONSO ALONSO, Ambassador José COSTA PEREIRA, Ambassador Marcos GALVÃO and Mr. Javier NIÑO PÉREZ which gave a very interesting insight on past accomplishments and future opportunities in the bi-regional relationship.
On International Women’s Day, SAGE organized two great events. The first was a Masterclass on “Gender-based Bias & Microaggressions” by Claudia DE CASTRO CALDEIRINHA, world-renowned consultant and author. The second was a panel discussion on "Gender equality in the workplace" with the Best Friends group of international law firms.
In the canteen day and the bar night (Sabor Latino themed), the students got to experiment national delicacies and cocktails. Apart from the tortilla de patatas, empanadas and bacalhau espiritual, there was a chance to savor national tapas and petiscos, as well as the typical Caipirinha and Sangria at the Latin Night Party at the Student Bar.
Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to try a tasty aperitivo and take part in a Solidarity Zumba Class by the Spanish Society.
For our last joint event, we held a cultural fair where the students enjoyed more of our traditional gastronomy, sweets, accompanied with a wine tasting. The night was filled with traditional music and the students got to take salsa and sevillanas lessons.
The week ended with the Queeropeans event on Saturday at Karel Verleye residence, it was a party organized around the theme “Clothes have no gender”.
As a whole, it was a very fun week where the students got immersed in l’esprit de l’Amérique Latine, du Portugal et de l’Espagne and got to experience the best of our countries and societies.
