Training on EU Fact Checking & EU Fact Finding: Ahead of the European Elections 2024

On Friday, 26 January 2024, the College of Europe delivered the course 'EU Fact Checking & EU Fact Finding: Ahead of the European Elections 2024’ organised in collaboration with Headline News Facilities Productions, a Brussels-based video production company.

The full-day training, led by Prof. Luciano Morganti, was part of the Electi Facts: Euro 2024 initiative and aimed to equip 20 journalists with essential skills in EU fact-checking and fact-finding.

With the backing of the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), Electi Facts: Euro 2024 (https://www.electifacts.eu) strives to provide crucial fact-checks for campaigns leading up to the European Parliament elections of 6-9 June 2024. Notably, the entire project is journalist-driven.

The training explored essential aspects and critical elements of the European Public Sphere, addressing challenges and issues. Prof. Luciano Morganti conducted insightful sessions on the EU's battle against disinformation, examining the current state of affairs and mapping out a path for the future.

The afternoon session focused on EU Fact Checking, empowering journalists to analyse and identify reliable EU information resources. The comprehensive training covered various topics, including fake news, general EU information, and the skill of checking EU news.

An additional follow-up session will take place online in March in order to take stock of the most relevant issues in the run-up to the 2024 European elections.

The College of Europe is grateful to Headlines News for the fruitful cooperation throughout the project and wishes all the best to the journalists in their crucial work to cover the upcoming European Parliament elections.
