Training Programme for Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI) in view of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union

The College of Europe had the honour of being selected by Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI) to deliver a series of training modules for officials involved in the forthcoming Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The training was attended by almost one hundred participants including advisors, project managers, lawyers, administrative assistants.

The training took place over four days between October and November 2023 and covered legislative procedures, policy formulation, and the intricacies of EU institutions. Designed to prepare participants also for future leadership roles, including chairing working groups and heading EU coordination units during the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU, the programme featured expert-led sessions and interactive discussions.

Experts in European affairs led the sessions, providing invaluable insights derived from practical experience in navigating the complex landscape of EU governance. Through lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions, participants gained insights into the nuances of European governance and diplomatic relations.

During the last day, participants were engaged in the Simulation of a negotiation within the Council of the European Union. This last session aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing participants for real-world challenges in EU decision-making and diplomacy. The trainers guided the participants in chairing multi-party negotiations and understanding the logic of EU negotiation processes. The participants gained insights into building coalitions, establishing partnerships, and cultivating relationships of quality and trust within their teams and with counterparts.

The College of Europe is grateful to Wallonie-Bruxelles International for the fruitful cooperation throughout the project and wishes all the best to the participants.
