Carsten Gerards (DE) is Senior Academic Assistant at the College of Europe in Bruges, having joined the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies in August 2018.  While pursuing a PhD project on the external dimensions of EU education policy at Leiden University, he also teaches at the Centre International de Formation Européene (CIFE) and is – as an External Research Fellow – affiliated to the Center for EU and Turkey Studies (CETEUS) at the University of Cologne.

Before joining the Department, Carsten worked as Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Cologne, where he was in charge of undergraduate courses in macrosociology and political science (2014-2017). Prior experiences include positions at the Schwarzkopf Foundation (2015-2017), the University Duisburg-Essen (2013-2014) and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne (2011-2013).

Carsten holds an MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe, Natolin (Simone Veil Promotion, major ‘The EU as a Global Actor’). In 2016, he graduated from the University of Cologne with a State Examination (‘Staatsexamen’, master level) in Social Sciences/Philosophy and, additionally, Mathematics (2019) . He spent an Erasmus semester at Warwick University (2015) and completed his teaching internships in Bucharest (2014).

Fields of interest: EU education policy, public diplomacy, EU interinstitutional relations, political theory.
