Carsten Gerards (DE) is Academic Assistant at the College of Europe in Bruges, Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies, since August 2018.

Before joining the Department, Carsten worked as Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Cologne, where he was in charge of undergraduate courses in macrosociology and political science (2014-2017). He is also teaching at the Centre International de Formation Européene (CIFE). Prior experiences include positions at the Schwarzkopf Foundation (2015-2017), the University Duisburg-Essen (2013-2014) and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne (2011-2013).

Carsten holds an MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe, Natolin (Simone Veil Promotion, major ‘The EU as a Global Actor’). In 2016, he graduated from the University of Cologne with a State Examination (‘Staatsexamen’, master level) in Social Sciences/Philosophy and, additionally, Mathematics (2019) . He spent an Erasmus semester at Warwick University (2015) and completed his teaching internships in Bucharest (2014).

Fields of interest: EU education policy, public diplomacy, “soft” and “normative power”, and political theory.
