Carsten GERARDS

As Assistant to the Rector, Carsten Gerards (DE) supports the work of the Rector by preparing dossiers and following up on decisions as well as liaising with all services and departments.

Between August 2018 and January 2021, Carsten worked as (Senior) Academic Assistant at the College's Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies – and will continue supporting the Department's team until June 2021 in parallel to his role in the Rector's Office. 

While pursuing a PhD project on the external dimensions of EU education policy at Leiden University, he also teaches at the Centre International de Formation Européene (CIFE) and is – as an External Research Fellow – affiliated to the Center for EU and Turkey Studies (CETEUS) at the University of Cologne.

Prior professional experiences include positions at the University of Cologne (2014-2017), Schwarzkopf Foundation (2015-2017), the University Duisburg-Essen (2013-2014) and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (2011-2013).

Carsten holds an MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe, Natolin (Simone Veil Promotion, major ‘The EU as a Global Actor’). In 2016, he graduated from the University of Cologne with a State Examination (‘Staatsexamen’, master level) in Social Sciences/Philosophy and, additionally, Mathematics (2019) . He spent an Erasmus semester at Warwick University (2015) and completed his teaching internships in Bucharest (2014).
