Launch of the Coal Regions Learning Academy (CRLA)

On 14 June 2023, College of Europe in Natolin launched the Coal Regions Learning Academy (CRLA) – a training project developed jointly by the World Bank and the College of Europe in Natolin to assist stakeholders in Western Balkans and Ukraine in planning and implementation of a just coal transition.

The event brings together representatives of coal regions from Ukraine and Western Balkans, of the principals of the Initiative for Coal Regions in Transition in Western Balkans and Ukraine, a representative of the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership and UN Office for Project Services.

Special guests will attend the event to share their experience and expertise with the participants. Dr Wolfhart POHL, author of one of the e-learning modules in the CRLA, will deliver a workshop on recultivation of post-mine areas and protection of health and environment. Dr Agnieszka GAWLIKOWSKA-FYK will present the findings of a report on a transition plan for Europe’s largest coal-fired power plant, located in Bełchatów, Poland, prepared by Forum Energii.

The CRLA is part of Initiative for Coal Regions in Transition in Western Balkans and Ukraine that aims to help countries and regions to move away from coal towards a carbon-neutral economy in a just transition process. The principal actors of the Initiative are: the European Commission, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank, the Energy Community Secretariat, Poland’s National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, and the College of Europe in Natolin.
