On Tuesday, 31 January 2023, the Natolin Energy and Climate Nest organized the first event of the second semester titled "Energy sector of Ukraine amid war: keeping the lights on today and accelerating decarbonization in Europe tomorrow". This workshop took place from 14:30 to 16:00 in the Natolin Winter Garden.

About the topic:

Starting from 10 October 2022, Russia launched hundreds of missiles and drones in order to destroy Ukraine’s energy sector. This has caused significant damage to the energy system, forcing Ukraine to stop exporting electricity to the EU and to introduce rolling blackouts. Under these conditions, ensuring the operation of the energy sector and preserving the energy system of Ukraine as such becomes a condition for the survival of Ukrainians.

How Ukrainian energy companies manage to keep Ukraine from plunging into darkness and how a private company can contribute to ensuring energy security: these issues were discussed during a lecture by Mr Maksym TIMCHENKO, CEO of DTEK, the largest Ukrainian private energy company. DTEK produces 20% and distributes 40% of electricity in Ukraine. DTEK assets have been attacked by drones, missiles, and artillery over 180 times.

Another important topic of discussion was the prospects for further coupling of EU and Ukraine energy markets, decarbonization, and strengthening of European energy security.
