Language programme
Please note that the College only organises courses for students registered at the College.
The Bruges Language Service of the College of Europe supports students throughout their studies in the two working languages of the College - French and English - by offering specialised language courses and workshops targeted to both the academic and professional needs of the students.
Please check the specific language requirements for the different study programmes in Bruges.
EU International Relations and Diplomacy students receive language tuition as part of their programme.
Summer French courses
The Alliance Française de Bruxelles-Europe organises summer French courses for admitted students of the College of Europe.
Introductory programmes
French and English courses are organised as part of the introductory courses for students of the European Political and Governance Studies and the European Legal Studies.
Semester one
English and French courses are organised throughout semester one in order to help students adapt to the academic environment.
The basics of grammar are covered as deemed necessary, but the focus is mainly on improving academic and professional language skills.
Students who are not native speakers and who do not possess internationally recognised language certificates at Council of Europe B2 level are advised on arrival to see if they should follow these courses.
Semester two
Academic French and English writing workshops and tutorials are organised to help students with thesis writing and the development of professional writing skills.
Other languages
All students can follow German, Italian, Dutch and Spanish courses.
In most cases, the College, or the cultural institute, provides a certificate indicating the Council of Europe level obtained.
Workshops
The language service organises a number of workshops dealing with linguistic and professional skills:
- Academic French and English writing Academic French and English writing workshops and tutorials are organised to help students with thesis writing and the development of professional writing skills.
- Communication workshops Students have the opportunity to attend communication workshops where an active approach is taken towards professionalising presentation and public speaking skills. Students are filmed, and given direct linguistic and skills feedback on an individual basis.
- Negotiation skills The College allows students to practice and improve negotiation skills. The Language Service supports students in the linguistic side of this.
- Terminology Students are given the opportunity to attend specific French terminology workshops:
- Terminologie juridique en français
- Terminologie institutionnelle de l’Union européenne
