Rima graduated from New York University with an M.A. in Journalism through a Fulbright scholarship. After graduation, she worked as a reporter for the pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat, covering the activities of the UN headquarters in New York.

Later, she joined the Committee to Protect Journalists to work as a researcher for the Middle East and North Africa programme. In 2010, she moved to Beirut and started working for the Los Angeles Times as a reporter. In 2012, she joined National Public Radio to work as a field producer, covering mainly Syria and Lebanon. She then moved to Oxford as a journalist fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University. In 2013, she joined Reuters as a video producer, and in 2015, she worked as a broadcast journalist for BBC Arabic in London.

In 2017, after 12 years in journalism, she started working as a Communications Officer for the World Health Organization in Geneva. She is a recipient of the EU Media Migration Award (2017, second prize in the Online category) and the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Award for Reporting Across Cultures (2012). She was also part of the NPR team that received the George Foster Peabody Award (2013) and the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award (2013) for their coverage of Syria.
