Workshop on Cultural Diplomacy with Professor Paolo SABBATINI

About the workshop:

Cultural Diplomacy is a moving and promising field of action and career. It is an important “arm” of the Soft Power of a country able to impact and add value to its reputation, cities, cultural institutions, as well as its economy.

  1. The course began with a case study: the birth of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997.
  2. Cultural diplomacy as a European tool for promoting artistic freedom.
  3. Second case study: UNESCO, as a peace-building and maintenance apparatus.
  4. Communication policy, a tool to maximize the profit of soft power.
  5. Group exercise.

About the speaker:

Prof. Paolo SABBATINI (b. 1955) is an emeritus senior member of the Italian Foreign Service. He is an International Spokesperson for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, cooperating with the European Union Group of Cultural Institutes of the Member Countries (EUNIC). He also teaches Cultural Diplomacy in several academic institutions, among which the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, Italy, Cairo Badr University, Egypt.Sabbatini has a Degree in Political Sciences from the Sapienza University of Rome; a Master’s Diploma of International Economics from the Universita’ Commerciale “L. Bocconi” of Milano, as well as Universities of Montpellier and Tours (France) and at the Italian Society for International Organization in Rome (SIOI).

Prof. Sabbatini has an experience of over 40 years in international relations, public affairs, and top-level negotiations. This experience he gained through his longstanding services to UNICEF, and UNDP in Morocco, China, India, and Pakistan. In Italian Diplomacy, Mr. Sabbatini occupied many central positions related to Cultural Diplomacy among which; Senior Expert and Officer at the Development Cooperation Department, the Government Relations Coordinator for the INGO World Vision International, Executive Officer in the Office of the Director-General for Culture, Science and Technology, Director the Italian Institute of Culture in Shanghai, Prague, Cairo, and Brussels, he was also the Area Coordinator of Italian Cultural Institutes in Arab Countries, then in Europe. Paolo Sabbatini was the title of Knight Commander Grand Cross of the Government of Peru in 1993.
