We would like to take the opportunity to invite you to conference on "Greek Financial Situation: awkward predicaments and future perspectives".

After a long and ongoing period of tensions between the Commission and Greece, mostly due to the bad fiscal results of the Greek economy after August 2009, Greece is in the front page every week for all the wrong reasons. Greece is a country with rich culture and civilization, that formed the cornerstone of the European society.

Modern-day Greecks believe Greece can still play a constructive role in the European Union and in the world, rather than forming a heavy burden that Europeans have to carry with them “for old times’ sake”.

In spite of the undeniable responsibilities of the Greek governments it is becoming gradually clear that speculation takes over from productive criticism, making any internal reforming effort even more difficult.

The conference will be chaired by Professor Michele CHANG and will comprise two speakers:

Prof. Loukas TSOUKALIS, Special Adviser to the President of the European Commission; Jean Monnet Professor of European Organisation, University of Athens; President, Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). Prof. TSOUKALIS is also a visiting professor at the College and former director of the Economics Department.

Prof. Cinzia ALCIDI, LUISS Research Fellow on Economic Policy, Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). Prof. ALCIDI has written extensively on the current financial crisis.

The event was organised by a private initiative and had the support of the Politics department.
