Part of the National Week Debate Series, Europe Outside the Box - Debate Club invites you to an open forum debate on EU enlargement, held in cooperation with the students organizing "Ever Closer": Western Balkans National Week.
Many say the EU has had enough, and even more seem to believe that Brussels would better focus on resolving the critical issues facing the Union and the functioning of the internal market, rather than pursuing further enlargement.
Membership is allegedly on the table for the candidate countries, but what if these countries prefer to opt out, while continuing to import EU standards? Beyond the peculiarities surrounding the relation between the EU and Iceland or the EU and Turkey, we would like to look specifically at how this debate is developing in relation to the Western Balkans.
Serbia's rapprochement with Russia, Macedonia's ongoing frictions with Greece, the pressure to end the spread of corruption in Montenegro, and the multiple issues beyond these countries' politics keep the Western Balkans a site of intense struggle.
There is lots of room for discussion and we will benefit from valuable inside information and the specific knowledge of our colleagues coming from Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Serbia.
We start at 20:15 on Tuesday 17 February 2015 in Room E (Dijver).
The registration form below is to be filled in by external guests only. Thank you.
