High-level lecture “The Sustainable Development Goals: Global and European Perspectives” by Ms Cihan SULTANOĞLU

Ms Cihan SULTANOĞLU, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, delivered a guest lecture to the students of the College of Europe on “The Sustainable Development Goals: Global and European Perspectives”. The high-level lecture was organized by the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies and offered students the opportunity to ask questions about the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals as well as about the United Nations. UNDP inter alia offers graduates the opportunity to start working for the United Nations as Junior Professional Officer or Special Assistant to Resident Coordinators.

About the speaker

Ayse Cihan SULTANOĞLU is Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She was appointed to this position by the UN Secretary-General in April 2012.
Ms SULTANOĞLU has had many years of distinguished service at UN/UNDP, including leadership positions at the country and headquarters level. She previously served as the Director of Human Resources in UNDP’s Bureau of Management. Prior to this, she served as Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director, RBEC (2007-2010); UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus (2004-2007); UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Lithuania (2000-2005); Deputy Resident Representative in Morocco (1995-2000); Deputy to the Director of the Office of the Administrator (1993-1995); Recruitment Officer and later Staffing Specialist for Junior Professional Officers (JPO), Division of Personnel (1988-1993); Recruitment Officer, Division of Personnel, (1986-1988); Administrative Officer, UNDP Malawi (1982-1985). She started her career as an administrative trainee in New York and Bangkok (1981-1982). 
Ms SULTANOĞLU holds an MA in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University as well as a BA in Economics from Barnard College at Columbia University, New York. She speaks Turkish, English and French. She was awarded with the “Order of the Commander of the Cross” by the President of Lithuania in 2005.

This lecture was closed to the public, but open to all students of the College of Europe.
