The 13th ELEA symposium was organized by the students of the College of Europe’s European Law and Economic Analysis study option and took place on Wednesday, 21 June 2017 in Bruges. The symposium focussed on the topic of "Competition Law and Regulation" with three different panel discussions on the following issues:

  1. Exploitative abuse under Art. 102 TFEU: Which lessons can be drawn from the UK CMA’s cases on excessive pricing in the pharmaceutical sector and AG WAHL’s opinion in Case C-177/16?
  2. Standard setting after Huawei and Unwired Planet: What is the role of competition law in regulating standard essential patents?
  3. Competition law and product design: Is it possible to walk the tightrope between effective competition law enforcement and undue interference in design choices?

Speakers were Professor Mike WALKER (UK Competition and Markets authority), Luca PRETE (European Court of Justice), Miguel RATO (Shearman & Sterling LLP), Professor DE STREEL (Centre on Regulation in Europe and UNamur) and Professor Pablo IBÁÑEZ COLOMO (LSE and Chillin‘ Competition). The event was co-hosted by Professor Phedon NICOLAIDES (ELEA Director of Studies) and Professor Damien GERARD (EC and Director of the Global Competition Law Centre).
