Decarbonising energy: Lessons from history and policies for the future — Launch event for the Energy Chair

Thursday 07.02.19
16:00 to 18:30

House of European History, Fables Room and Auditorium
Rue Belliard 135
1000 Bruxelles

The College of Europe is delighted to welcome you to a very special event, as we dive into history in an effort to draw lessons from the energy transition in the 19th century—and the upheaval that stemmed from it—for the future of our current decarbonisation efforts.  Join us, in February, in celebrating the launch of the IBERDROLA Manuel Marín Chair for European Energy Policy. With the development of the EU’s long term decarbonisation strategy as a key component of the Union’s Paris Agreement commitments, this should be a timely and insightful discussion.

We start with the history of European energy policy to set the scene for a discussion on the unprecedented challenges the EU, and the rest of the planet, faces as we transition to a carbon-free world. The event will consist of two debates with high-level speakers on the future of decarbonisation. The full agenda is available below.

Places for this event are limited and registration will be on a first come, first served basis. Confirmation of your place will be sent shortly after registration in the form below. The deadline for registration is 31 January 2019, 12:00 (noon). Please inform us at energy.chair [at] in case you cannot attend the event.

18.30-19.30                  Reception in honour of Manuel MARÍN

The discussions will be followed by a cocktail reception in honour of Manuel MARÍN. The College of Europe has honoured MARÍN's role in European history by appointing him the Patron of the Academic year 2018-2019, and giving his name to the Chair for European Energy Policy. One of his greatest achievements at the European level was the establishment of the Erasmus Programme in 1987, which has enabled millions of European students to spend part of their studies at European universities abroad. MARÍN, who passed away on 4 December 2017, presided the Iberdrola Spain Foundation since 2008, and played a key role in the EU’s history with the accession of Spain to the EU.

The Energy Chair is kindly supported by IBERDROLA
