Webinar "Competition law and the age of algorithms: Challenges and opportunities for the EU digital agenda" with Mr Andrea RENDA

From 14:00 till 14:30

The College of Europe offered a webinar on "Competition law and the age of algorithms: Challenges and opportunities for the EU digital agenda". It took place on 2 June 2017 from 14:00 to 14:30.

The webinar addressed the issue in the context of the EU Digital Single Market and discussed in particular the possibility of refining competition law enforcement, especially in those cases in which the use of algorithms and Artificial Intelligence shape market conduct.

Since the mid-1990s, the internet economy has increasingly become a challenging field for competition law, mostly since the competitive dynamics observed in the digital economy are hard to reconcile with established antitrust tools such as market definition, the finding of market power and its abuse, and the identification of possible remedies.

Since the first steps of the EU’s investigation against Microsoft in the early 2000s, this mismatch has been growing, and arguments in favour of reform have become more recurrent. Today, getting competition policy right on the internet is even more important since large online intermediaries have come to play a pivotal role for competition, innovation, and even the enforcement of legal rules such as data protection and security, in what is often referred to as the ongoing "platformization" of the internet.

The webinar linked directly with the Executive Education course on EU Competition Law & IT Markets which includes Mr Andrea RENDA as one of the trainers.
