2017 Executive Education courses – an overview!

As part of its activities, the College of Europe Development Office organizes executive education training courses on a regular basis. This year, it implemented ten such courses, welcoming on its premises in Bruges over 150 participants. They attended either the summer courses or the autumn ones (some even coming twice during the year for two different courses!).

The summer months are always very busy at the College because this is when the College of Europe Development Office runs the most training courses. There is even a week during which it runs four courses in parallel, which allows for increased networking opportunities and exchanges, especially during the evening social events.

For twenty-four years, the Intensive Seminar on the EU has taken place. It has 3 programmes lasting from one to three weeks and it has attracted over 40 participants this summer. Also for many years, the College has been contributing to a course on EU Transport and Railway Affairs (ETCR), currently in partnership with the European Training Centre for Railways and the European Union Agency for Railways. This year the course had 28 participants from railway companies and agencies from all over Europe.

In order to respond to the developments at EU level, a two-week course on the Energy Union was recently developed. It analyzes the various dimension of this European strategy. For the second edition, which took place this summer, and for the 2018 edition, a partnership has been established with InnoEnergy and EDF.

During the same period in July, a one-week course on EU Competition Law took place, followed by a new three-day course on Competition Policy & High-Tech Markets. Given the links between the two courses, some participants attended both and could avail themselves of a discount.

Another recently developed course taking place during the summer is one on Monitoring and Evaluation, which was launched in 2016. The course can be combined with one of the autumn courses, namely: EU Project Management. This is a one-week course on the life of EU projects, from programming to tender writing, to project implementation and evaluation. This year, the 7th edition of the course took place and welcomed more than 20 participants. In parallel, a course on Negotiations in Practice was implemented, also lasting one week and including many exercises and simulation games.

This autumn the College of Europe Development Office also welcomed participants for shorter courses. Firstly, in September the second edition of a course on migration took place: Managing Migration in Europe: Challenge and Response. This is a three-day course which gives an overview of the main legal instruments for migration management at EU level, as well as its main actors, and the implementation challenges that might arise. Secondly, in October, there was a three-day course on EU Diplomacy & Diplomatic Skills, which in addition to theory also offered practical sessions and exercises on reporting, communications and negotiations at international level. Thirdly, there was a four-day course on Trade Policy that, this year, in addition to covering EU and WTO trade law and policy, also analyzed several EU FTAs (e.g. CETA and EU-Japan) and current issues such as Brexit.

Therefore, overall, it was a busy year and we look forward to an even busier 2018!
