Dr Andriy TYUSHKA, Senior Research Fellow at the European Neighbourhood Policy Chair of the College of Europe in Natolin, has published a new article for the Journal of Contemporary European Studies (JCES) titled "Weaponizing narrative: Russia contesting EUrope’s liberal identity, power and hegemony".
This article addresses such instances of ‘narrative weaponization’ in Russia’s lasting moves to discursively contest and counter the EU’s liberal identity, its regional power across the immediate neighbourhood as well as the (Western) liberal-democratic hegemony in global politics at large.
The article starts with conceptualizing the notion of ‘weaponized narrative’ and then deploys it, in quantitative and qualitative narrative enquiry (that partially draws on ‘big data’ analytics), in the study of Russia’s strategic rationales, goals and messages behind its confluent narrative offensives vis-à-vis the EU, Ukraine and the US since the early 1990s.
