Rector MOGHERINI joined the HUME Inaugural European Conference on ‘Leadership for Peaceful Change’ (1-2/07)

The John & Pat Hume Foundation and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI) held the HUME Inaugural European Conference on ‘Leadership for Peaceful Change’ on Thursday 1 and Friday  2 July 2021.

This virtual conference examined how Europe inspired many of the ideas and approaches that Nobel Peace Prize laureate John Hume applied to peace making, peace building and reconciliation in divided societies and how in turn his peace making philosophy continues to inspire current peace makers and peace builders around the world.

The importance of the EU is highlighted by his speech at the European Parliament shortly after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 when he said: “The Peace Process in Northern Ireland, as far as I am concerned, has been most heavily inspired by the inspiration of this place…the European Union is the best example, as we have learned, in the history of the world of conflict resolution, and the philosophy that created the European Union and the peace of Europe is the philosophy if you study it that it is at heart of our Agreement.”

On Friday, 2 July 2021 (15:45-16:40), Rector MOGHERINI addressed "EU support to conflict resolution and peace building in the Middle East & North Africa", in a conversation with Zahra’ LANGHI, Co-founder and CEO of the Libyan Women’s Platform for Peace, moderated by Michael KEATING, Executive Director of the European Institute of Peace.
