Roundtable on the Future of Europe: Brexit and Beyond

On 5 November 2019, the European General Studies Programme organised a roundtable discussion on the Future of Europe beyond Brexit. Visiting Professors of the EG Programme, students of the College and the invited speaker discussed issues which need to be addressed in order to build a resilient and cohesive Europe, and tackle the rising tide of euroscepticism and populism across the continent.

The roundtable began with contributions from the students:

  • Herda XHAFERAJ on the EU’s relations with the Balkans and the future of enlargement;
  • David TIMIS on the conflict between the EU institutions in the context of Brexit;
  • Elena MAIER and Anna KOMPATSCHER on gender equality and its importance for the future of Europe.

During their introductory statements the speakers reacted to students’ interventions while presenting their research and analysis of the consequences of Brexit, and the processes that surround it, for the EU’s internal and external policies. Then a very interesting discussion, between the students and the speakers, followed on different aspects of Brexit and its impact on the future of Europe.

Moderator:

Wolfram KAISER, Professor of European Studies at the University of Portsmouth and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe and at the University of Bonn.

Speakers:

Christopher BICKERTON, Reader in Modern European Politics at the Department of Politics and International Studies, Cambridge University, and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe.
