Sculptures by famous Polish artist Magdalena ABAKANOWICZ exhibited at the Natolin campus

The campus of the College of Europe in Natolin has recently been ornamented with the works of the famous Polish sculptor and fiber artist Magdalena ABAKANOWICZ (1930-2017).

The sculptures made of bronze, which are displayed on the grass nearby the Włodkowic residence, are called "Skull II" (produced in 1998/1999) and were previously exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The sculptures are part of the series of "skulls" designed by Magdalena ABAKANOWICZShe is widely regarded as one of Poland's most internationally acclaimed artists and is notable for her use of textiles as a sculptural medium. 

Magdalena ABAKANOWICZ was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (Poland) from 1965 to 1990 and a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1984. During her life she received numerous international awards and honors, including the "Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award" by the International Sculpture Center in Hamilton, USA.

Her works have received global recognition and are displayed all over the world. Some of her famous exhibitions include:

  • "Agora" in Chicago's Grant Park;
  • "King Arthur's Court" in the Cristal Palace of the Museo National de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid;
  • "Walking figures" in the San Peter's Church in Cologne;
  • "Bambini" displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Jardins du Palais Royal in Paris;
  • Exhibition at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris.
