The College of Europe Natolin campus, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and the Polish-American Freedom Foundation (PAFF) announce a call for applications for the sixth edition of the Warsaw Euro-Atlantic Summer Academy (WEASA) which is scheduled to take place between 9 and 20 July 2018.
The title of WEASA 2018 is The Politics of Technology: Information, Disinformation, and Security in a Digital Era.
WEASA 2018 will look into several topics, including:
- The media and journalism in a digital age;
- The fight against misinformation and disinformation;
- The role that social media plays in politics and democracy;
- The personal and institutional dimensions of cybersecurity.
In short: the digital world has often managed to transform our political and social worlds in profound, if often near-invisible, ways. Many issues, from the role of disinformation in politics to free speech, manifest themselves very differently in the digital era than they did only decades ago. Our goal is to make WEASA participants aware of how our politics, society, and security have changed in a digital era.
Eligibility
WEASA 2018 is addressed to participants coming from a cross-section of society and specifically from public administration, academia, think tanks, media and civil society organizations. Which countries must applicants be from?
We welcome applicants who are citizens and residents of the following countries:
- Eastern Partnership countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine;
- Western Balkan countries – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia (FYROM), Montenegro, and Serbia.
Whom do we look for?
We typically look for people who meet the following three criteria:
- They are mid-career professionals, typically with at least five years of professional experience, ideally in a field related to the topic of WEASA 2018;
- They work as policy analysts, experts, advisers, civil servants, journalists, private sector specialists and in NGOs;
- They are interested in the European integration process, state transformation processes, transatlantic cooperation, cybersecurity, journalism, and digital media.
WEASA 2018 lectures will all be designed with a non-technical audience in mind – you don’t need to be a digital expert in order to sign up!
Speakers
The WEASA 2018 program will be delivered by prominent academics and analysts from leading European and American think tanks, as well as high-level officials and practitioners.
Expenses
WEASA will cover travel, boarding and accommodation expenses.
