UVALIĆ M. - The Single Market and the Political Economy of European Integration and Enlargement (20h)

The course aims to provide students with the basic theoretical and analytical foundations for understanding the processes of European economic integration, the most important concepts of the European Union’s Single Market and related issues of EU enlargement, particularly in reference to the Western Balkans. The historical roots of the Single Market are recalled, the “four freedoms” as the pillars of the European integration process, and the main phases of its implementation. The various reforms aimed at “completing” the Single Market are also analysed, including recent proposals on how to improve its efficiency. These issues are related to the current processes of European integration and EU enlargement policy towards the Western Balkans, including the channels of EU – Western Balkans economic integration, their preparedness for eventual EU membership, and recent proposals for promoting their further integration with the EU. The course should enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills for analyzing the economic integration prospects of the Western Balkans with the European Union within a wider European context.
