On 4-5 February 2010, the InBev-Baillet Latour Chair of European Union-China Relations in the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges organised an international conference on “The EU and China: Partners or Competitors in Africa?”.

The conference primarily addressed European, Chinese and African scholars, journalists, policy practitioners and representatives of NGOs and offered an opportunity to enhance the understanding of the EU’s role in Africa, to assess the prospects for EU-China cooperation or competition in Africa and to reflect on its impact on the continent. The diversity of the participants contributed to establish multidisciplinary and transnational channels of dialogue among Europeans, Chinese and Africans.

With the support of a European Commission grant under the LLP Jean Monnet Programme (DG Education, Audiovisual & Culture) the conference brought together European, Chinese and African scholars, journalists, policy practitioners and representatives of NGOs to assess the prospects for EU-China cooperation or competition in Africa and to reflect on its impact on the continent. The best papers presented at the conference will result in a book publication.
