New publication by Dr Irene FERNÁNDEZ MOLINA: "Protests under Occupation: The Spring inside Western Sahara"

Dr Irene FERNÁNDEZ MOLINA, Research Fellow at the European Neighbourhood Policy Chair of the College of Europe, Natolin (Warsaw) campus, has just published a journal article in Mediterranean Politics entitled "Protests under Occupation: The Spring inside Western Sahara".

The article is part of a special issue on "Arab Spring and Peripheries" edited by Dr Daniela HUBER (Istituto Affari Internazionali) and Dr Lorenzo KAMEL (Bologna University/Harvard University).

Summary:

The argument put forward is that the empowerment of the Sahrawi pro-independence movement inside the Western Sahara territory, under Moroccan control, as a periphery, was made possible not only by variations in the opportunity structure mainly at the Moroccan state level, which were actively seized by the internal Sahrawi activists through a novel combination of domestic non-violent resistance and international "diplomatic" activism, but also that the recognition achieved through these strategies was crucial in this process.
