The course maps the multiple origins and genealogies of the idea of Europe, discussing its changing character and boundaries. The course focuses on key periods, events, and developments that have informed the notion of Europe through time, with the aim of showing how Europe’s past can help us to understand Europe’s present and to imagine and shape its future. The legacy of Europe is thus assessed in terms of its ideals and representations, both past and current. Special attention is devoted to Europe’s crises and recoveries.
