BEIRENS Hanne - Managing Migration in Europe: Taking Stock of the Legal Tools, Best Practices and Practical Challenges in the Field of Migration and Asylum (25h)

Professor: Hanne Beirens

Academic Assistant: Maël Leroux

Migration is increasingly defining the course of the EU. Migration has swiftly risen to the top of the EU political agenda, shaping not only the direction, pace of and potential for EU integration, the political constellation of its Member State governments, and the composition and social glue of its communities, but also the Union’s position on the international scene. It is therefore crucial that those working within EU institutions, or opting for a professional career that will require the navigation of that formidable body, develop an evidence-based understanding of what migration entails.

The aim of this course is to stimulate the buildup of this knowledge base via thematic lectures, which will weave in present policy discussions (e.g. revisions to the EU legislative framework on return; Pact implementation) and developments on the terrain (e.g. internal border controls within the Schengen area to reduce onward movement of migrants). The course structure (see Section Course Content) is built up around the key moving pieces in the EU migration sphere.
