YOUNGS Richard - EU Democracy Promotion and Human Rights Policy (25h)

This optional course examines EU external policies in the field of democracy and human rights. It will assess how far a commitment to support democracy and human rights is incorporated into EU external relations. The course will consider whether there is a conceptually distinctive European understanding of democracy and human rights, before examining the nature of EU policies in a number of different regions of the world. It will look at the invasion of Ukraine and other Eastern Partnership issues, the Middle East and North Africa, China and other global challenges to democracy. The course will explore the place of democracy and human rights in the shifting global order and the EU’s internal democracy crisis.
