PETITMENGIN Violette - Français I / French I (55h)

The aim of this French course for students with an entry level of A2+/B1 is to reach a B1+ level which, based the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), can be described as follows: the student can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; can produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interest; can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans; can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events); be able to write simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; can write personal letters describing experiences and impressions.

The course will take students through the tense system and use, pronouns, present/past/future tenses, introduction to subjonctif, the basic syntactic patterns in spoken and written language, the specific particles of academic and argumentative discourse and some of the terminology required for other courses that are part of the curriculum. Most of the time will be devoted to practical exercises (spoken and written) from the field of European studies.
