BALFOUR R. – The Radical Right and European Foreign Policy (8h)
This seminar aims to inform students about the nature of the radical right in Europe and how it influences foreign policy decisions of the European Union and its members.
It will do so by combining insights from comparative political science and EU foreign policy analysis, considered the best approach to understand the intersection between domestic and European-level dynamics shaping collective action.
Students will familiarize with:
- Concepts and definitions pertinent to understanding the phenomena of populism and the radical right in Europe and elsewhere
- The landscape and variety of radical right parties in Europe
- Critically assess the ways in which these forces affect – or not – foreign policy at the EU level and beyond, and how they connect with or differ from other challenges to EU collective action
- Examine the case the enlargement, assessing its potential developments in the future
- Assess the consequences of the radical right’s influence on EU foreign policy and international politics more broadly
