VEZYROGLOU A. – EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans (8h)

The seminar aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans as a multi-faceted tool of EU support aiming to bring socio-economic convergence and integration with the EU. The seminar will focus on the mechanisms of EU assistance, including the Reform Agendas and the single market aspects, and political challenges involved in aligning the Western Balkans economies with EU standards. Students will critically analyse the policy framework, its implementation, and the impact on socio-economic development, regional integration and stability.

By the end of this seminar, students should be able to:

  • Understand the institutional framework through which the EU supports the region.
  • Critically assess the objectives and effectiveness of the Growth Plan in fostering economic development and integration in the Western Balkans.
  • Evaluate the role of structural reforms, investment policies, and economic governance in regional growth.
  • Analyse the political, social, and economic challenges facing Western Balkans countries in implementing the Growth Plan.
  • Engage in informed debate about the potential for EU membership as a driver of regional transformation.

The teaching methods will include interactive lectures and case study discussions, encouraging students to explore the practical and political implications of EU policies in the region, as well as the role of local and international stakeholders.
