BIEBER F. - Political History and State-Building in Southeastern Europe (20h)

This course will introduce students to the main trends in the development of Southeastern Europe, with a focus on the 19th and 20th century. It will explore the decline of empires, the rise of nationalism in the 19th century, the consolidation of nation states in the 20th century, the impact of border changes, fragile statehood and the two World Wars, as well as socialism. It will conclude with the main trends of political developments in post-socialist Southeastern Europe. It will be doing so by examining some of the key controversies, as well as by examining multiple dimensions of nationalism, state-building and the role of Southeastern Europe in larger European and global developments.
