ELEZI G. - Democratic Consolidation and the Rule of Law in Southeastern Europe (20h)
This course will focus on providing essential knowledge and presenting key components for understanding and critically assessing democratic consolidation processes in Southeastern Europe. Its main objectives consist of equiping students with the necessary information and instruments to:
- Understand the concepts and main theoretical approaches of democratic consolidation and the rule of law within the context of Southeastern Europe.
- Analyse and critically discuss the role and impact of internal and external actors in promoting and consolidating democratic governance.
- Understand, analyse and use main existing components and indicators for assessing and evaluating democratic consolidation processes.
- Explain and discuss main structural factors impacting democratic consolidation and the rule of law, such as corruption, independence of institutions, accountability and transparency, backsliding, etc.
- Critically assess specific case studies, draw comparisons between countries and discuss challenges and future prospects on democratic consolidation.
